Inspired by medieval and Byzantine artwork, the Gold Collection is an accumulation of ideas and conceptions. Combining the ancient approaches with a contemporary and updated aesthetic brings the past and the present together. The prompting for this collection is to research the ideas and methods of past artists, as well as to explore the possibilities of creating complexity from simplicity.
Made up mainly of squares and circles, the concept of the intersection of earth which is finite, and heaven which is infinite is brought forth. The arrangement of simple shapes into more intricate compositions is both visually soothing and yet fascinating.
Subtle earthly imagery makes its way into some pieces, and the use of gold paint and gold leaf is present in every image, emphasizing the idea of the heavenly.
This collection is a study for a series of larger, and more intricate works which Kate will be researching more fully when she moves back to Italy in September. So keep your eyes open because this is just the beginning!
